Using Relaxation to Support Trauma Recovery and PTSD

Trauma leaves an imprint not only on the mind but also on the body. For individuals living with the aftermath of traumatic experiences or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the nervous system often remains in a state of heightened alert. This can manifest as hypervigilance, difficulty sleeping, intrusive thoughts, and overwhelming emotions. As a counsellor, I have witnessed how relaxation techniques can become vital tools in helping clients restore a sense of safety, calm, and control in their lives.

Relaxation is not about ignoring or minimizing trauma—it is about creating moments of respite from the intensity of its impact. When practiced consistently, relaxation helps regulate the body’s stress response. Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery are particularly effective because they signal the nervous system to shift from “fight-or-flight” mode to a calmer, more balanced state. This physiological shift allows the mind to process difficult emotions with greater clarity.
