Using Meditation to Enhance Self-Awareness in Therapy
Self-awareness is a cornerstone of personal growth and emotional well-being. Many clients come to therapy seeking clarity about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, yet find it challenging to understand the patterns that drive their reactions. As a counsellor, I have observed that meditation can be a powerful tool to enhance self-awareness, offering clients a pathway to greater insight and emotional balance.
Meditation encourages individuals to pause, observe, and reflect. By focusing attention on the breath, bodily sensations, or present-moment experiences, clients learn to witness their thoughts and emotions without judgment. This process creates a sense of distance from automatic reactions, enabling individuals to recognize triggers, habitual patterns, and underlying beliefs that may influence their behavior.
